A sizes in pixels

Pixel sizes depend on the resolution you design at, measured in dots (or pixels) per inch. The same A4 page is 595 × 842 pixels at 72dpi and 2480 × 3508 pixels at 300dpi. The table gives every A size, and DL, at the three resolutions designers use most, all in portrait.

Which resolution to use

Use 300dpi for anything held in the hand and read up close: flyers, leaflets, business cards, booklets and menus. 150dpi is enough for posters and signs seen from a step or two away, and large banners can go lower still. 72dpi is a screen convention, not a print one: an image that is 72dpi at A4 will look soft and pixelated when it’s printed.

Adding bleed

For print, add 3mm of bleed on every edge so the background runs past the trim. An A4 page with bleed is 216 × 303mm, or 2551 × 3579 pixels at 300dpi. Keep text and logos at least 3mm inside the trim, or 10mm on posters, so nothing gets cut off.

How A sizes work

Every A size has the same proportions, 1 to the square root of 2, so a design scales between sizes without cropping. Each size is half the one above it: two A5s make an A4, and two A4s make an A3. A0 has an area of one square metre. DL is a third of an A4 sheet, the size of a standard DL envelope.

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is A4 at 300dpi?
2480 × 3508 pixels in portrait, or 3508 × 2480 in landscape. With 3mm of bleed on every edge, it’s 2551 × 3579 pixels.
What size is A3 in pixels?
At 300dpi A3 is 3508 × 4961 pixels. At 150dpi, which is enough for a poster, it’s 1754 × 2480 pixels.
What size is A5 in pixels?
At 300dpi A5 is 1748 × 2480 pixels, the usual size to design a flyer at.
Is 72dpi good enough for print?
No. 72dpi is fine for screens, but printed at full size it looks soft and pixelated. Use 300dpi for print you hold in your hand, and 150dpi for posters.
