What Does a Monthly Graphic Design Retainer Include?

How a monthly design retainer works

A monthly design retainer is a fixed monthly fee that gives your business regular access to a designer without needing to quote each project individually. You agree on a scope of work for the month — a certain number of social graphics, print items, website banners or campaign assets — and the designer delivers those within the agreed timeframe. This arrangement works best when your business has predictable, recurring design needs.

What a typical month covers

A monthly creative support package covers social media graphics for regular posting, printed collateral like menus and event posters, website banners and updates, email headers, and campaign artwork for promotions and seasonal offers. The exact scope is agreed at the start of the arrangement. Monthly support plans start from £295/month and scale with the volume and complexity of work required.

What is usually excluded

Monthly retainers cover ongoing creative output — they are not designed for major strategic projects. Full brand identity work, new website builds, large-format exhibition design or complex ecommerce builds are typically quoted separately. If a significant one-off project arises during a retainer period, it is usually handled as an additional project with its own brief and budget rather than absorbed into the monthly scope.

How to set up a retainer that works

The most effective retainers are built around a clear understanding of what your business produces each month. Before agreeing on a retainer, list the recurring design tasks your business actually needs — social posts, print items, website updates — and use that as the basis for the scope. Vague retainers with no defined deliverables usually lead to frustration and wasted effort. Clear scope, regular check-ins and an agreed revision process make retainers work well for everyone.
