Digital Signage / Commercial Screens

Digital Signage Design

Screen-first communication systems built to win attention fast in noisy, fast-moving public environments.

Category Overview

Where this category gets won or lost.

A signage-focused body of work delivered for airports, retail and hospitality environments. The emphasis is deployment reality: hierarchy that reads at distance, pacing that works for moving audiences, and modular content logic that scales cleanly across large screen estates.

Hierarchy tuned for distance readability and split-second decisions

Campaign systems adapted across portrait and landscape screen networks

Deployment logic proven across public, retail and hospitality contexts

Production-ready templates built for recurring content cycles

Case Study

Digital Signage Design: the brief, my role and what was delivered.

The challenge

Screens are read at a distance, for a few seconds, by people walking past. Content that works as a poster usually fails on a screen. It needs fewer words, a stronger hierarchy, motion that guides the eye rather than distracting it, and templates that hold up when the content changes every week across many sites.

My role

Senior Graphic Designer at Add Vision (2020 to 2026), after a year in-house at Optical Express (2019 to 2020).

  • Managed screen content end to end for live commercial environments across retail, hospitality, corporate and visitor spaces.
  • Designed high-turnover content suites: menus, promotions, campaign bursts and screen sequences.
  • Built reusable layout logic for multi-screen and multi-site rollouts without visual drift.
  • Screen content for Glasgow Airport, including seasonal and Mother's Day campaigns.
  • Clinic display and waiting-room screen content at Optical Express.

How I approach it

  1. 01Design for viewing distance and dwell time first, then style: one message per screen, large type, high contrast.
  2. 02Plan portrait and landscape versions together rather than cropping one into the other.
  3. 03Use motion to lead the eye to the offer, timed to how long people actually look.
  4. 04Build templates so recurring content, such as menus and weekly offers, can change without a redesign.

Deliverables

  • Screen content
  • Digital menu boards
  • Promotional sequences
  • Campaign bursts
  • Portrait and landscape layouts
  • Motion graphics
  • Large-format and environmental graphics
  • Production-ready templates

Separately from the employer work above, I built VIZN AI through my own company, VIZN AI LTD: a system that generates on-brand signage screens from a brand's guidelines. It is my own product, not client work. Read the VIZN AI case study
