What an ecommerce website costs
A starter ecommerce website starts from £1,750: a template-customised Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix or Squarespace shop with homepage, shop and product page layouts, an about and contact page, basket and checkout styling where possible, up to 10 initial product uploads, mobile-friendly layout, basic SEO setup and launch support. An advanced ecommerce website starts from £3,500, with a fuller category structure, policy pages, up to 30 initial product uploads, and guidance on shipping, tax and discount setup.
Choosing a platform
Shopify is the simplest to run if selling is the main purpose of the site. WooCommerce suits businesses already on WordPress or wanting more control. Squarespace and Wix work well for smaller ranges where the website also needs to tell a strong brand story. The right choice depends on how many products you have and who will manage the shop day to day.
What these packages are not for
Very large catalogues, advanced filtering, subscriptions, trade portals, custom checkout functionality or warehouse integrations need specialist development and are quoted separately. Most small Glasgow retailers and makers do not need any of that to start selling online.
Design still sells
An online shop is judged on trust: clear product photography, honest delivery information, simple navigation and a checkout that works on a phone. My web work includes designing and building a classic-car sales website and app and website design for Jim Beam, alongside years of retail and campaign design, and the same principle applies: make it easy to buy.
Running the shop after launch
Ecommerce support costs £395 a month and covers product listing updates, category management, seasonal and sale banners, up to 3 shop banners or promotional graphics and up to 15 product uploads a month. For many small shops, that is cheaper than learning to do it all in-house.
